Who’s behind 1MAK Birmingham?

1MAK Birmingham is a Christian led initiative that hopes to ignite a movement of kindness across our city.

‘Working together for social change’

Behind 1MAK Birmingham is a collection of Christian individuals, Birmingham churches, community organisations and statutory agencies working together.

These include the Diocese of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police, Birmingham Churches Together, Council of Black Led Churches, Thrive West Midlands and is part-funded by the Church Urban Fund.

The aspiration of 1MAK Birmingham is to see social transformation across our city through stronger relationships and a shared commitment to bless the city through practical action and a generosity towards each other.

Redeeming Our Communities

Civic partnerships and collaborative working

The 1MAK Birmingham project idea came out of a launch event held at the NIA in November 2010 called Redeeming Our Communities (ROC) Birmingham.

ROC Birmingham is a Birmingham churches led initiative bringing together the city council, West Midlands Police, voluntary sector and other faith groups to work in collaboration and address the needs of communities across the city.

Bless Birmingham

‘Unity, humility, support and generosity’

Birmingham is facing some of its toughest challenges, however we believe God stills loves and is concerned about the city of Birmingham.

We can all make a difference by having a shared commitment to bless the city through, humility, respect and a generous attitude towards each other. In doing so we recognise we live in a richly diverse city – where our opinions and ways of doing things may be different but we share a common desire for the well being of Birmingham.

Prayer is a great act of kindness

‘Prayer changes things’

As part of the 1MAK initiative in Birmingham we want to encourage people to pray blessing in your home, your neighbourhood, your workplace, school or college and for the City of Birmingham itself.

We can pray for the blessing of peace for those who are going through stressful and challenging times. We can pray for the blessing of wisdom for those who have positions of leadership in our community and across the city – and wisdom for people we know who are wrestling with difficult issues and problems.

We can pray for the blessing of harmony and healing in broken and hurting families, workplaces or communities. Across the city and in our different neighbourhoods we can pray for the blessing of safety and peace. Birmingham was know as the city of a thousand trades we can pray for blessing on our economy and for new jobs and we can pray for protection and blessing for our young people.

Here is a great prayer you can use:

“The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace.”

Can Birmingham be a city of blessings – we think so – its an exciting prospect!

Being a good samaritan

Who is my neighbour?

Christians are motivated by their faith to do acts of kindness, many people will have heard about the story of the good Samaritan  whether in biblical context or not. (Luke 10:25-37)

Let your light shine

In your city, your communities, your streets,
your homes’

In these dark times of uncertainty we can be bright lights of hope ignited through our daily acts of kindness toward one another. 1MAK Birmingham is about the impact we can have where we live, work and socialise. Jesus challenges us to, “let your light shine before all men, that they may see your good deeds” (Matthew 5: 16).

This is a time for ALL individuals to be light – through acts of kindness and increased prayers and blessings. We are now in a time when people need hope, when our communities need kindness and love, when our city needs us all to work together to make a contribution.

Our hope is that everyone will be inspired by this call to action and have rekindled optimism and an enthusiasm for playing their part in making Birmingham an even better place to live for everyone. This starts with each of us as individuals – but collectively the impact will be tremendous.

Imagine what Birmingham would look like if there was an outbreak of kindness across the city and everyone did a daily act of kindness. We're challenging everyone to take part in '1 MAK Birmingham'.
